What Taking Care of Yourself Really Looks Like (Especially After 40, 50, and Beyond)

In my last post, I shared that as I approach 60, one thing has become very clear:

Taking care of yourself isn’t about perfection or vanity — it’s a radical act of self-care.

But what does that actually look like in real life?

Because for most people, “self-care” has been sold as something extra, something you do when you have time. A reward after everything else is done.

And the truth is, most of us never get there.

The Truth About Self-Care

Real self-care isn’t dramatic. It’s not all-or-nothing. And it doesn’t require hours of free time.

It’s built in the small, consistent choices you make every day.

It’s how you support your body, your mind, and your energy, even when life is busy.

What It Actually Looks Like

Here’s what I see both in my own life and in the clients I work with:

1. Moving Your Body (Consistently, Not Perfectly)

This doesn’t have to mean intense workouts.

It can be walking, strength training, stretching, or simply moving more throughout your day.

Consistency matters more than intensity.

2. Eating to Support Your Energy

Not restriction. Not perfection. Just learning how to fuel your body in a way that helps you feel steady, strong, and satisfied.

Think: protein, fiber, and hydration are simple foundational habits.

3. Protecting Your Sleep

Sleep is one of the most overlooked forms of self-care.

Better sleep improves everything, your energy, your mood, your ability to follow through on the habits you care about.

4. Managing Stress with Intention

Stress is part of life. But how we respond to it matters.

Even small practices like pausing, breathing, stepping away, and setting boundaries can make a meaningful difference.

5. Practicing Small, Repeatable Habits

This is where real change happens.

Not in big bursts of motivation, but in the small things you’re willing to do consistently.

A Simple Reframe

Self-care isn’t something you earn. It’s something you practice, and it doesn’t have to be overwhelming.

In fact, the best place to start is simple.
